The North Center Town Square project, located along Belle Plaine between Damen and Lincoln, is scheduled to start construction in April or May of 2019. The project will be going out to bid before a contractor is selected, permits are secured, and work begins. The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of December 2019. Highlights include installing new pavers across Belle Plaine and the old plaza area, closing vehicular traffic along Belle Plaine at Lincoln, adding a stage and lawn area in the existing cul-de-sac, installing a play mound and fencing, replacing trees and adding landscaping, adding seating and lighting, and more. The renderings below illustrate the plans as of the 90% complete phase for engineering, so some amenities may change with the “as built” version. These improvements will help activate this space and enable additional programming year round.
In addition to providing a total of $600,000 in Aldermanic Menu funds (2017 and 2018), I authorized an additional $1.45 million in TIF funds to bring this concept to reality. The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce commissioned the concept design with PORT Urbanism. I would like to thank the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce, the Northcenter Neighborhood Association, and each and every one of the community members who contributed their assistance and feedback during the community input process; nearly 2,000 survey responses were collected and 3 community meetings were hosted to help inform the final design. Additionally, I want to thank Chicago Department of Transportation Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld and CDOT’s entire design and engineering team, including Site-Design, PORT Urbanism, and Civiltech Engineering.
