Update on Permit Parking Task Force

After a series of public meetings the 47th Ward office staff and the Transportation Committee evaluated the existing permit parking conditions, made recommendations for changes, and developed our policies on permit parking requests in the ward (see Permit Parking Report 1/2012 but note that some details to the existing zones changed in implementation, and the Community Meeting Presentation 1/2012). Feel free to contact Brad@Chicago47.org with any questions or comments.

Process for Adding/Changing Permit Parking Zones

To Add Permit Parking to a Block

  1. A petition to add must be completed with 65% in favor, counting one vote per housing unit. The petition must describe the desired restriction.
  2. The petition and a written description of the parking impacts facing the block must be submitted to the ward service office.
  3. Aldermanic staff will review the situation and contact the residents if any other information is needed (i.e. petition of support from a neighboring block, notice posted to the area)
  4. With the Alderman’s approval an ordinance would be introduced to City Council and the Department of Revenue conducts a survey to verify if it is in fact appropriate to have permit parking on the block.

To Make Changes to Existing Permit Parking Zones

  1. A petition to change your block must be completed with 65% in favor, counting one vote per housing unit. The petition must describe the desired restriction change.
  2. Submit the petition and a written description of the parking impacts facing your block.
  3. Aldermanic staff will review the situation and contact the residents if any other information is needed (i.e. petition of support from a neighboring block, notice posted to the area)
  4. With the Alderman’s approval an amendment (or a repeal, if the request is to remove a permit zone) to the  ordinance will be introduced to the City Council.
