If you are interested in having a tree planted in a parkway at your own cost:

  1. Contact a landscape company who will be planting the tree.
  2. Once you decide on the tree, price, and location, the landscape company applies for a planting permit from the Bureau of Forestry. There is no cost for the permit.
  3. The city will verify the company has liability insurance and the location nursery from where they are obtaining the tree. This information also triggers a site inspection to insure the tree will not be planted on utilities.
  4. Once we have this information we issue the permit and the landscape company can plant the tree.

Residents who are not tree professionals cannot be issued permits to plant the tree themselves.

Forestry has a recommended list of trees suitable for Chicago.
